As I understand it Doc was renting a horse, so how could Slaughter know his bronco?

More. "The vehicle (Slaughters wagon) was rounding a long turn; the horseman (Holliday) cut across country through the mesquite...

Who would cut across Mesquite covered ground at nightime?

It seems unlikely to me that Doc would engage in frantic riding at night to go up against Slaughter who would likely kill him. But who can be sure?
